Step Well Series # 2 - Nahargarh Fort Step Well

The step well at Nahargarh Fort above Jaipur is the inspiration for my second box in the series based on Indian step wells. It is less a step well in the sense of a carefully designed symmetrical structure, and more a huge reservoir with terraced sides carved out of the hills overlooking Jaipur, and dammed at one end. There is nothing else like it. Water collected from the hills is funneled into the step well at the far end by a sluice, viewable through the octagonal well hole, and cascades down divided channels into the terraced cistern. At the near end is the dam topped by stairways to a promontory where one can view both the step well on one side and the valley below on the other.
