One has to imagine that when one comes upon this step well, all that one sees are the four little pavilions and the entrances to the four sairways, as the rest of the structure goes down into the earth. The incredible thing about stepwells is that they are really inverted architecture, and one doesn't see them until one is just above them, loking down into them.
