The Heaven and Hell Reliquaries

25"h - 15"w - 15"d. Figured Maple and Walnut Stump. Nineteen compartments.

Medieval Christians kept their holiest relics - bones of saints and pieces of the True Cross and Crown of Thorns - in reliquaries that often looked like miniature churches or holy buildings. These were my inspiration for this sculpture. It is actually a set of two separate box sculptures. The upper sculpture, Heaven, sits on the lower, Hell, much as many of the early Christian churches were built atop the ruins of earlier pagan sanctuaries.
